Women’s Health Screenings: What You Need at Every Age

Preventive care is one of the most important ways women can protect their long-term health. Routine screenings can detect potential health issues early—when they’re easier to treat or even prevent entirely. At Emmanuel Medical Clinic in Panorama City, we believe every woman deserves compassionate, personalized care at every stage of life.

Why Are Health Screenings Important?

Health screenings are medical tests that check for diseases and conditions before symptoms appear. They’re essential for early detection, which can dramatically improve outcomes and help you live a longer, healthier life.

Whether you're in your 20s or 60s, here’s a quick guide to the key screenings recommended for women at different ages.

In Your 20s and 30s

1. Pap Smear & HPV Test

  • Frequency: Every 3 years (or every 5 years if combined with HPV test)
  • Why: Screens for cervical cancer caused by HPV (Human Papillomavirus)

2. Breast Exam

  • Frequency: At your annual check-up
  • Why: Early detection of any breast abnormalities

3. STD Screenings

  • Who Should Get It: Sexually active women
  • Why: Helps prevent complications and protects reproductive health

In Your 40s

1. Mammogram

  • Frequency: Every 1–2 years starting at age 40
  • Why: Detects early signs of breast cancer

2. Cholesterol & Blood Pressure

  • Frequency: Every 4–6 years, or as advised by your doctor
  • Why: Helps identify risk of heart disease

In Your 50s and Beyond

1. Colon Cancer Screening

  • Start Age: 45–50
  • Frequency: Every 10 years for colonoscopy (or sooner based on risk)
  • Why: Detects colon cancer early

2. Bone Density Test

  • Start Age: 65 (or earlier if at high risk)
  • Why: Screens for osteoporosis, especially after menopause

3. Diabetes Screening

  • Frequency: Every 3 years (or as needed)
  • Why: Detects early signs of type 2 diabetes
